Is your barrier damaged? Five signs and a two-week reset

Reading time: 5 minutes

A damaged barrier is the most common reason a routine suddenly stops working. Products that felt fine start to sting, and skin can be oily and dry at the same time. The good news: with a short break and a few gentle products, most barriers recover in about two weeks.

Five signs

  1. Stinging. Products that never stung before now sting.
  2. Tightness. Skin feels tight within minutes of washing.
  3. Redness that comes and goes without a clear reason.
  4. Flaking in patches, often around the nose and mouth.
  5. Breakouts with dryness. More breakouts than usual alongside dry patches.

If two or more sound familiar, the reset below is worth trying.

The two-week reset

Step 1: pause the actives

Stop all exfoliants, retinoids and vitamin C for two weeks.

Step 2: four gentle steps, morning and night
Step Product Why
1 Cloud Gel Cleanser Cleans without stripping
2 Barrier Milk Toner Adds back water
3 Centella Calm Serum Calms redness
4 Barrier Cream Replaces lost lipids

Add sunscreen in the morning, such as Daily Sheer Fluid SPF 50.

Step 3: change how you wash
  • Wash with lukewarm water
  • Pat dry with a soft towel
  • Avoid cleansing brushes

All four steps are available together in the Barrier Reset Kit.

Coming back to actives

  1. Wait until skin feels calm for five days in a row.
  2. Reintroduce one active at a time, a week apart.
  3. Start with the one you missed most.
  4. If redness returns, go back to the reset for another week.

See a dermatologist if symptoms last beyond four weeks or come with swelling or pain.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear makeup during the reset?

Yes, if it does not sting. Remove it gently in the evening and keep the rest of the routine simple.

Why does my skin feel oily and dry at once?

When the barrier is weak, water escapes easily, so skin feels tight even while it still produces oil. The reset helps with both.

Do I really need to stop vitamin C?

For two weeks, yes. It can sting on a weakened barrier. You can bring it back once skin has settled.
